BONUS: did you find a CD for sale with some exclusive Disney World music? What did you find and where was it for sale?
MRS. JOHNSON'S GUIDE TO DISNEYWORLD!
DON'T JUST EAT PIZZA AND BURGERS!
Somewhere between burgers and formal dining are the establishments in Disney’s new “fast casual” category, including three in the theme parks: Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station in the Magic Kingdom, Sunshine Seasons Food Fair in Epcot, and Studio Catering Co. Flatbread Grill in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Fast-casual restaurants feature menu choices a cut above what you’d normally see at a typical counter-service location. At Sunshine Seasons, for example, chefs will prepare grilled salmon on an open cooking surface while you watch, or you can choose from grilled chicken or pork, tasty noodle bowls, or large sandwiches made with artisanal breads. These locations all feature Asian or Mediterranean cuisine, something previously lacking inside the parks. Entrees cost about $2 more on average than traditional counter service, but the variety and food quality more than make up for the difference.
OTHER PLACES TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT!
The counter service, fast casual, and food vendors in the Animal Kingdom and the EPCOT world showcase feature foods from other cultures carefully selected to appeal to basic American tastes. Be sure to consider Tangierine Cafe in Morocco and the Yakitori House in Japan. Sunshine Seasons in the Land Pavilion in Epcot's Future World has great food like grilled salmon, gourmet cheese and fresh vegies.
If you want to leave the Magic Kingdom to eat good food and not go very far, take the monorail to the Contemporary Resort and eat and the Contempo Cafe. It is set up somewhat like the food court at our hotel or at the Sunshine Seasons, offering the basics plus salads and flat bread sandwiches with ingredients like turkey with brie, grilled marinated vegetables, marinated beef with goat cheese and arugula and dinner entrees including chicken, pasta, and fish.
Although you should be sure to see the McDonalds at Downtown Disney, there are other counter service food options you should consider here: Cooke's of Dublin, Wolfgang Puck Express (Crème Brulee!), and Earl of Sandwich.
SPEND YOUR TIME WISELY
Don't spend your time doing stuff you can do at home.
Learn how to use fast passes and then USE THEM!
Go to sleep at night so you can have fun in the morning.
Be at a park entrance BEFORE it opens in the morning. (see above)
Study park maps BEFORE you get there to learn where things are and what you want to do.
Lines at the 'big' rides are shortest at the moment the park opens and minutes before the park closes.
Take a break in the afternoon to swim or otherwise cool off and hit the parks again around 6:00 pm.
SPEND YOUR MONEY WISELY
Don't buy lots of bottled water and soft drinks. Take along a water bottle to fill from water fountains.
If you ask nicely, you can get a cup of ICE at most food and drink counters for free.
Ice Cream snacks are some of the most expensive items in the park. If you are hot and tired, get out of the sun.
Fruit is one of the least expensive items in the parks and there are lots of fruit stands.
You CAN now bring in food and drink into the parks if you follow the rules like no glass or big coolers, etc.
Bring some snacks from home that travel well including Peanut Butter in a plastic jar.
If you hate to get wet, bring a $1 rain poncho from home instead of buying one at the park for $15 or more.
Cool Club is a place with FREE Coke Brand Products from around the world at EPCOT Futureworld.
TREAT YOUR BODY WISELY
Bring sunscreen and wear it!
Only bring shoes you KNOW won't cause blisters or hurt after miles of walking. Bring bandaids anyway.
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. And, don't forget to eat 'real' food, not just 'junk.'
Sleep on the bus. Sleep at night.
Warning: EPCOT is especially HOT and BIG.
EPCOT TOURING TIPS (Monday Morning)
1. Be at the front gate when the park opens.
2. Keep track of the time to meet the group for lunch and our workshop. Don't be late!!!
3. Grab a schedule near the front gate of life musical performance during the day and the various nations.
4. Grab a map, it will help, honest.
5. If you want to ride Soarin’, walk FAST to the Land Pavilion: Get a Fast Pass if there is already a line.
6. If you want to ride Test Track, cross Future World, Get a Fast Pass if you rode Soarin’ and there is already a line
7. IF you are going to ride Mission: Space next door, be VERY sure you can handle it without getting sick.
8. There are lots of other great things to do in Future World, including Spaceship Earth, if you have time.
9. To start your trip around the world with Mexico, walk past Test Track toward the lagoon.
10. Now is when you read the schedule of musical performances and BE SURE TO SEE ONE
11. If you have not already stopped your park tour to meet the group for lunch and our workshop, it's probably time!
• See the first page of Mrs. Johnson's Guide to Disney World to learn more about eating at EPCOT.
• Get a hand stamp when leaving ANY park.
• Don't just walk from country to county; go INSIDE the buildings. (Sorry, there isn't much to see inside in Italy)
• Maelstrom (Fast Pass available) is in Norway. If you are lucky, you can hear Norwegian Fiddle Players too.
• 360 movies in Canada, France, and China. I recommend China or France depending on your tastes.
• The World Showcase area has the best snack carts in Disney World!
• HOT and TIRED? Stop at the American Adventure half way around the World Showcase to watch the Animatronic show while you sit and cool off.
Disney World Chaperone Suggestions (from Passporter Guide Books)
Even before the bags are packed, your "job" begins. Attend any informational meetings your trip coordinator schedules. Maintain an open line of communication via telephone, note carried by your child, or e-mail. Talk to the parents of your assigned kids for anything you might want to keep an eye and ear out for, such as how they might act if they are home sick. Most importantly, give the parents YOUR contact info (especially cell phone number if you will have it with you on the trip) so they can call YOU if their child calls them from the trip with a problem.
You don't need to have a dozen visits to Walt Disney World under your belt to be an "expert." There is a wealth of information available to help prepare you for the trip. Disney offers a free video, the internet has numerous sites, and there are guidebooks galore. Don’t wait until the week before the trip to start learning about the parks.
Look over maps of the parks. Disney offers a set of free maps to all the parks on their website. Become familiar with the lay of the "World." Check the menus for each of the restaurants at sites such as AllEars.net so you can recommend the best burger, pasta, and salad place at each of the parks (staples of teenagers' diets).
When it is time to pack, be sure to pack yourself shoes you can walk MILES in without getting blisters. Take your swim suit…the kids will be having way too much fun to notice what you look like in yours. (The other chaperones will be grateful because there is safety in numbers. ) Pack a couple of $1 rain ponchos or clear large garbage bags just in case.
Tuck in a few extra snacks. (The night before we left, we made little "Mickey Mix" snack bags for the kids - Mickey pretzels, "Minnie" marshmallows, M&M's, peanuts, Cheerios, etc. We put about a cup of mix in Disney treat bags. Even though the kids on our trip were in their late teens, they still got a kick out of the treats. And what teenager do you know that doesn't like food?! And after they have been dropping a couple bucks at a time into vending machines for snack-size bags, they will appreciate it even more.
It is wise to pack a bag of little extras -- band aids, ointment, sunscreen, safety pins or a sewing kit, duct tape, sanitary items, etc. If you are a chaperone that can help the students out in a pinch, they will soon be looking for you whenever they need help. As they are getting patched up, they often will let you know if anything else is bothering them. Sometimes there is a student who is homesick or having trouble coping with a friend. It gives them the opportunity to have a bit of one-on-one time with a caring adult.
Bring a couple of Disney DVDs for the bus. Disney films are usually G or PG and appropriate for everyone. They may groan at a "kiddie" movie, but as they watch it, they become quite attentive. And a few Disney cartoons can lighten the mood when they are getting cranky.
When you have a bit of doubt as to what is going on behind that closed door, don't hesitate to knock and ask a question. As a chaperone, it is your responsibility to be sure they are safe and following rules.
Don't hesitate to correct bad behavior. If you nip small problems, they don't turn into big ones. Kids realize you will not be letting them get away with bad behavior and they usually respond in kind. If you see bad behavior, give the student a reason why they can't do it - I find their response is much better. Instead of saying "Get up so that lady can sit down," say "That mother will have a hard time holding her little girl when the bus starts moving. Why don't one of you let her have your seat?" Of course, it works best if you set a good example and offer your seat first. I notice after I give up my seat, the students are pretty quick to catch on and almost always look for someone to whom they can offer their seat. Don't permit line jumping. Show them how to use FastPass and they will less likely to jump lines. Explain that if they want to ride with their friends, they can let other families move ahead of them, and wait until they are back with their friends. The students appreciate photos of their entire group of friends, so when you see a group, even if it isn't your assigned group, offer to take a group photo for them.
Be prompt. It is tough enough waiting on dawdling students, but when they wait on a chaperone, it is even worse; plan on being everywhere 5 minutes early. Be sure you carry the itinerary and other information given to you by the trip leaders. They must be able to count on you to know what to do. If you don’t know what to do, be sure to ask.
The trip will be tiring. Be sure you catch up on your zzz's and be well rested prior to the trip. Once under way, if you need some down time, don’t be afraid to ask trip leaders or chaperones for someone to sub for you for a few hours. You need to take care of yourself and enjoy the trip as well.
